Benchmark

A benchmark is a permanently or semi-permanently fixed point from which measurements can be made for specific purposes. For example, we measure from National Geodetic Survey monuments for elevation to perform FEMA elevation certificates.

Or we might measure from a cotton gin spike set in the side of a power pole for elevation control for new subdivision being built.
